What do you need to pack for a trekking tour to Hadrian's Wall? Here are a few essentials for your kit for safety and convenience.
- Hiking boots: You'll be doing a lot of walking, so comfortable shoes are a must.
- A map: There's a lot to see along Hadrian's Wall, so it's helpful to have a map to help you plan your route. We provide all visitors with our digital map but many also bring a physical map as back up. The entire path is well marked for your convenience.
- A camera: There are plenty of photo opportunities along the way, so don't forget your camera!
- Snacks and water: Make sure you pack enough food and water for the day. Carry a small day bag to carry provisions.
What Type of Bag do we need for Hadrian's Wall
When it comes to packing for Hadrian's Wall, the most important thing to consider is what type of bag to bring. There are a few different options, and the best one for you will depend on your personal preferences and needs.
The first option is a backpack. Backpacks are great because they're easy to carry, and they distribute the weight evenly across your body. They're also relatively small, so they won't take up too much space in your luggage. However, backpacks can be difficult to access while you're walking, so if you need to get something out frequently, it might not be the best option. These are usually the best option if you would prefer to carry your own bag rather than utilise the transfer service.
Most overseas visitors will have a suitcase which can be transferred as part of your package. This is a good choice if you have a lot of stuff to bring or if you don't want to carry your bag around on your back. Its worth bringing a day bag to carry all items required for the day such as snacks and water.
Finally, there are duffel bags. Duffel bags are larger than backpacks and usually have one strap that goes over your shoulder. They're easy to access and usually have plenty of room for everything you need to pack. However, they can be uncomfortable to carry for long periods of time, and they might not fit in smaller spaces like overhead bins on airplanes.
Clothing For Hiking
When it comes to clothing for hiking, there are a few key items you will need to pack. Firstly, make sure you have a good pair of walking boots or shoes. These should be comfortable and provide good support for your feet, as you will be doing a lot of walking on the Hadrian's Wall Trail. Secondly, pack some comfortable and breathable clothes to hike in. Again, comfort is key here, as you want to be able to enjoy your hike. Thirdly, pack a waterproof jacket and trousers. This is essential in case of bad weather, as you don't want to get caught out in the rain. Finally, make sure you have a hat and sunscreen packed too, as the sun can be strong when hiking in exposed areas. It's very likely you could experience rain and sun on the same day in Northern England.
Hiking Boots
When it comes to choosing the right hiking boots, there are a few factors to consider. The first is the terrain you'll be walking on. If you're planning on doing a lot of walking on uneven or rocky terrain, you'll want a boot with good traction and support. Another factor to consider is the weather. If you're hiking in cold weather, you'll want a boot that's insulated and waterproof. And finally, you should make sure the boot fits well and is comfortable. Here are some of our favorite hiking boots for Hadrian's Wall:
- Salomon Men's Quest 4D 3 GTX Hiking Boots: These boots are great for all sorts of terrain and weather conditions. They have great traction and support, and they're also waterproof and insulated.
- Merrell Men's Moab 2 Vent Mid Hiking Boots: These boots are perfect for hot weather hikes. They're ventilated to keep your feet cool, and they have good traction and support.
- Columbia Men's Redmond Waterproof Mid Hiking Boots: These boots are a great option for wet or icy conditions. They're completely waterproof and have great traction on slippery surfaces.
Insulated Bottles
There are a few different types of insulated bottles available on the market, but we recommend investing in a good quality one that will last you a while. Thermos brand bottles are our top pick – they're durable and keep drinks hot or cold for hours. A 1L bottle should be enough to keep you hydrated during your hike.
First Aid Kit
A first aid kit is always a good idea when hiking, especially when doing so in remote areas. Pack items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain medication in case of minor injuries.
Trekking Poles
Trekking poles are an essential piece of equipment for any hiker, especially when hiking on uneven terrain. Not only do they provide stability and balance, but they also help to take the strain off your legs and back.
There are a few things to consider when choosing trekking poles, such as weight, length, and material. For Hadrian's Wall, we recommend lightweight aluminum poles that are adjustable in length. This way, you can adjust them to suit the terrain and your own height.
When using trekking poles, there are a few basic techniques to keep in mind. First, always hold them at waist level with your elbows bent at 90 degrees. This will give you the most control and power when using them. Second, plant the poles firmly into the ground with each step you take. And lastly, be sure to swing your arms in unison with your legs to really get the most out of your trekking poles!
Sunglasses and Sunscreen
Assuming you'll be spending most of your time outdoors, you'll want to pack sunglasses and sunscreen to protect your eyes and skin from the sun. Sunglasses will also help reduce glare while you're hiking. And don't forget to apply sunscreen regularly, even on cloudy days – the UV rays can still penetrate the clouds.
