Trip Itinerary
Your walk begins at Chollerford, where the remains of Chesters Fort sit beside the North Tyne river — one of the most complete cavalry forts on the Wall. From here the path climbs onto the Whin Sill, the dramatic volcanic ridge that carries the Wall through its most spectacular section. You'll walk through open moorland with sweeping views north and south before reaching Housesteads — the Wall's most atmospheric and photogenic fort. The day ends at Steel Rigg near Once Brewed, where the National Park Visitor Centre is an excellent first stop.
Day 2 continues along the crags, passing Cawfields and the well-preserved Milecastle 42, before the path begins its descent west. You'll pass through Walltown Crags and the Thirlwall Castle ruins as the Wall approaches the village of Gilsland. Take a detour to Birdoswald Roman Fort, which has the longest surviving stretch of original Wall curtain anywhere on the route. Your second night is in or near Gilsland.
Your final day is free to explore at your own pace. Options include: - Visiting Vindolanda, one of the most important Roman archaeological sites in Britain, where ongoing excavations continue to uncover remarkable artefacts - Revisiting a section of the Wall you particularly enjoyed - Taking the AD122 bus back to your start point, with stops at key sites along the way
Alternatively, some walkers use Day 3 as a travel day and depart from Gilsland or Haltwhistle.
